Music Pre-Audition

Marianopolis has a two-stage audition process. The first stage is a pre-audition which you must submit to the College. There is no application fee and no obligation to apply to Marianopolis after your pre-audition. The pre-audition gives us a chance to evaluate your level to see if we think you are ready to proceed to the audition at the Schulich School of Music of McGill University, the final part of the audition process.

To submit your pre-audition, you must first log in to or create your bemarianopolis account. On the Music Pre-Audition page, you will have access to the Username and Password for the pre-audition form. Once you have accessed the form, fill in the questionnaire about your musical background and upload your videos.

Audition Requirements

Classical singers and instrumentalists must prepare two contrasting pieces for the pre-audition. They may be performed with or without accompaniment. Jazz singers and instrumentalists must prepare two songs, one of which should be a jazz standard. Ability to improvise is an asset, but not required. Jazz drummers should prepare two songs, a snare study, and demonstrate the ability to play different styles (swing, Latin, funk, etc.). You may perform with a backing track or with live accompaniment, but stay safe!

Video Requirements

A video from a video camera is preferable, but you may submit a video from any recent model cellular phone with a good camera and microphone. If you are a pianist, take the video from the side with your posture and your hands in the shot. Instrumentalists and singers should ensure that we can see most of your upper body. String players should ensure we can see your bow arm and the fingerboard. Wind and brass players should arrange the camera so your embouchure and hands are visible. If you are using a music stand, make sure it’s not blocking the shot. Most common video formats are acceptable (.mp4, .flv, .mov, .avi, .mpeg, etc.)

After you submit the pre-audition video, the Music Program Coordinator will contact you with the results and may invite you to a short video interview.

The deadline for the submission of pre-auditions is March 1, 2021. It is in your interest, though, to submit the videos as soon as possible in the event that you need to work harder to improve for the McGill auditions in March. (Pre-auditions received after this date will be considered on a case by case basis.)

The second stage of the audition process, the formal audition at McGill, determines whether you are accepted into the Marianopolis Music Program. After you successfully complete your pre-audition we will schedule your audition at McGill. McGill will also only be accepting video auditions this term. Details will be communicated to you once you have passed the pre-audition and applied to the Music Program. Requirements are the same as the pre-audition except for pianists, who must prepare three pieces for the McGill audition. Singers and pianists must memorize their pieces.
